5. Reflecting on Numerical Comparisons
Longchen Nyingtik Meditation 5
The Beginning
Take refuge and arouse bodhichitta.
The Main Part
Reflect on the relative numbers of all different kinds of beings:
If the hell beings were as numerous as stars seen on a clear night, the pretas would be as many as the stars visible in the daytime; if the preta beings were as numerous as stars seen at night, the animals would be as many as stars visible in the daytime; and if the animals were as numerous as stars in the night sky, the humans would be as many as the stars seen in the daytime.
Among humans, those who have no faith in Buddhism and who always commit evil deeds are innumerable, while those who have faith in Buddhism are extremely rare. For example, a city in Han China may have tens of millions of people, yet will have very few Buddhists; moreover, among these Buddhists those who contemplate properly on the preciousness of human birth and the impermanence of life barely exist. Therefore, resolve: At present, I have obtained a precious human body, have met the sublime teacher and the authentic Dharma, and have aroused faith and devotion in the Three Jewels. I am very lucky to have these auspicious connections! Therefore, I must strive to practice the Dharma.
The Ending
Dedicate all the merit of your practice to all sentient beings.
