On the second day of the 8th World Youth Buddhist Symposium, Master Hai Tao, chairman of Taiwan Life Culture Foundation, gave a keynote speech titled “The Great Compassion in the Mind of Bodhichitta.”
Master Hai Tao's great compassion talk wove together his own life and the way compassion has become the essence of his practice.
He said he decided to take robes when his mother was stricken with cancer, but found that from this start his understanding of compassion expanded.
"Everyone is no other than my mother," he said. "Once you have the sunlight of great compassion, the ice of suffering in the heart will naturally melt."
Referring to the symposium theme of artificial intelligence and technology, Master Hai Tao said that renunciation - seeing all things are ultimately impermanent - is essential to realize great compassion.
" If you don't have renunciation you could be distracted by the external world," he said. "Everything is a mirage, an illusion."
Deep renunciation specifically applies to letting go of clinging to self, and dedicating oneself to the welfare of all beings in the six realms, he said.
"To protect and love sentient beings we have to remove all self-clinging," Master Hai Tao said, "Dharma is love."
During the afternoon meditation session on the third day of the symposium, Master Hai Tao gave teachings outdoors at Cherntawan International Meditation Center. He touched on similar themes.
