A Basic Practice of Meditation
How to do meditation? What is the simplest way that can be applied in everyday life? Sit down quietly, choose an object and focus one-pointedly on it without being distracted. If you train yourself persistently in this way, gradually, peace of mind will arise.
During meditation, you can sit in the seven-point posture of Vairochana or just sit peacefully. Then concentrate your mind on one object—a flower, a bottle or anything else you like. For those who have a religious belief, you can visualize religious symbols such as a Christian cross or a Buddha statue. In any case, focus your mind one-pointedly on the object you choose.
At the same time, it’s better not to close your eyes and take off the glasses if you wear them. If you find your surroundings to be disturbing and distracting, then it’s fine to close your eyes. Additionally, breathe slowly and naturally, and by doing so, this restless mind will gradually calm down.
Anyway, rest in such a state as long as you can. If initially you couldn’t rest your mind for a long time, you might start with a short period of 3 or 5 minutes, and persist in practicing like this. This is now a rather popular meditation practice to still the mind in our daily life.
