36. The Suffering of the Asuras
Longchen Nyingtik Meditation 36
The Beginning
Take refuge and arouse bodhichitta.
The Main Part
Meditate that the asuras (demigods) likewise have no chance of happiness: Asuras are consumed with jealousy. With their own kind, they have strife and rancor among territories and provinces, causing grave turmoil in their lives. Having seen the ultimate wealth and possessions of the gods, they are tormented with fires of jealousy, and constantly launch wars against them. Moreover, they simply cannot tolerate that all the gods’ splendor and wealth come from a wish-fulfilling tree that is rooted in the asura realm. Donning armors and wielding weapons, they set off to battle with gods.
A rebirth in the asura realm is like grains being stir-fried in a hot pan, allowing not a moment’s happiness but perpetual suffering. Therefore, resolve: I must quickly practice the Dharma that will uproot cyclic existence and lead me to profound peace.
The Ending
Dedicate all the merit of your practice to all sentient beings.
