On the first day of the 8th World Youth Buddhist Symposium, Dr. Sean Holden, a senior lecturer at University of Cambridge delivered his keynote speech titled "Artificial Intelligence: Why It Is a Big Deal, and Why It Is Not". Dr. Holden said the likelihood of artifical intelligence overtaking humans is small, just because the human brain is so complex and so capable of nuance.Pointed to the physical limits of computer chips, Dr. Holden said they're limited to the equivalent of 100 meters of wiring in a square millimeter of chip, while brain cells contain thousands of times that density. Second, Dr. Holden said it's nearly impossible for AI to comprehend the metaphoric subtleties of music and poetry, for instance the following line from Shakespeare's Hamlet: "Sleep that knits up the ravell'd sleeve of care." This is an example of nuanced understanding so far unique to humans, but nearly impossible for artificial intelligence, he said. "It's very hard for AI to deal with the background knowledge that makes metaphor work," Dr. Holden said.
