The Seventh World Youth Buddhist Symposium was held in Chiang Mai for the third time. With the theme “The Way to Happiness”, the symposium had attracted nearly 1,000 attendees from 33 countries and regions, among them are professors, scholars, university teachers & students and religious people. Speeches were delivered in different languages such as English, Tai, Tibetan, Mandarin, Japanese, French and Chichewa etc., which marked a new milestone on the path of the internationalization of World Youth Buddhist Symposium.
During Interfaith Dialogue section, representatives of Christianity, Islam, Sikhism and Buddhism shared their different views about happiness and discussed deeply how to gain happiness from the respective religion’s point of view. Keynote speeches were given by world-renowned Buddhist masters, renowned scholars and professors from University of Missouri, Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Hong Kong Polytechnic University etc. During Meeting with Wisdom section, discussions between renowned scholars, scientists and religious figures have shed much light into the topic such as “Life, Death and Happiness” and “Artificial Intelligence and the Happiness of Humankind”. In WeSpeak session, eighteen presenters from over ten countries such as the UK, America, Malawi, Canada, Czech etc. and two scholars from Charles Darwin University & University of Sheffield delivered their wonderful speeches about the way to happiness. On Day 3, nearly a thousand participants received meditation instructions by great masters from tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, Han Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism at Wat Phrathad Sri Chom Tong, followed by visiting the temple, joining the ceremony of bathing the Buddha relic and the life-releasing ceremony by a lake in the picturesque mountain together. During 4-days event, simultaneous and consecutive interpretation which all performed by volunteers from worldwide were provided for all the sessions. Meanwhile, live video streaming of the whole course of symposium were broadcasted by Taiwan Life TV Station. In the end of the symposium, many awards were given out such as Award of Best Essays on Way to Happiness, WeSpeak Award, Award of Best Essays on The Ideal Planet, Interpreter and Master of Ceremonies Award, Award of Outstanding Contribution to the Symposium and so forth. |
